Sunflower Surgery – How to Fix a Broken Sunflower Stem
YIKES! The crazy thunderstorm knocked down my sunflower the other day and its stalk bent and snapped. I am guessing you’re here because something similar happened in your garden. Sorry about that, but you are in luck as I am now an expert in how to fix a broken sunflower. Luckily I noticed the damage right away and repaired the stem so now the plant is still in full bloom over a week later!
I will share exactly what I did when my sunflower stem broke. As long as you noticed your plant’s problem early on, you should be able to help the stem heal.
Can you save a broken sunflower stem?
Yes, in many cases, you can save the plant if you notice quickly that a sunflower stem snapped. Depending on your garden setup, it may work best as a two-person job.
If the sunflower stem broke in half completely, like into two separate pieces, your outlook may not be as bright. However, if the sunflower stem bent over or split a little bit but stayed connected, you should have the best chance of successfully saving it.
The success of your sunflower stem repair will depend on a few things.
#1 – How soon you find the damaged sunflower stalk. If the stem snapped too long ago, it would not have been able to transport water to the rest of the plant very efficiently. You may see some wilted or crispy leaves or flowers if this is the case.
#2 – The method you choose when deciding not only how to repair it, but also how to support a broken sunflower stem. My preferred method of saving the plant after the sunflower stalk snapped requires masking tape and a garden stake or bamboo pole.
#3 – Finally, how well you monitor the repair job and make any needed adjustments. I was so happy with my work in remediating the damage that I forgot to check to see how the repaired sunflower stem fared after a future storm.
How to Fix a Broken Sunflower Stem
We grow sunflowers in our Pennsylvania garden every year! So, it makes sense that we also have our fair share of plant problems from time to time, including broken stems and pests such as the sunflower caterpillars.
Repairing a broken sunflower stalk is actually rather easy if you take your time and use the right materials. It’s a pretty quick job, although it may go more smoothly for tall sunflowers if you have a second set of hands.
Materials for Sunflower Repair
- Masking Tape
- Garden stake, bamboo pole, trellis, or other tall support to use as a splint
- Gardening twist ties / Gardening wire
Instructions
- Investigate the extent of the damage to the sunflower’s stem. If it is still hanging on a bit, and still connected to the roots in some way, that is a very good sign.
- Push a garden stake or other support into the ground directly next to the sunflower, being careful of any roots. While fixing the stem may be your first thought, I suggest installing the support piece first. I did it the other way around and struggled a bit as I was doing the repair task by myself. Depending on the height of your sunflower, it can be tricky to tape the stalk and then keep it steady while you push the support stake into the ground.
- Try to gently realign the stem so that it fits together as it once did. It doesn’t have to be perfect – just do your best.
- Unroll a length of masking tape and fasten it to the stem. You may have to hold the tape against the stem while you unroll a bit more and tear it from the roll.
- Wrap the tape around the broken stalk multiple times until it feels sturdier. Think of this like a cast.
- Lean the sunflower stalk against the stake if possible, and use gardening wire to tether it to the stake. Anything you can do to alleviate some of the weight of the sunflower should help.
What if my sunflower stem breaks very early on?
During early growth in the spring, sometimes animals like rabbits may eat sunflower plants. If a sunflower stem breaks above the first set of true leaves, new shoots may grow from the leaf joints. You can still try to tape the stem if it’s still attached or discarded nearby. However, if an animal ate it or it isn’t salvageable, you can simply try caring for the plant as it is and hopefully you will end up with two stems emerging.
What if my sunflower is bent but not completely broken?
This depends on your preference! You may leave the sunflower as nature intends and allow it to grow in the direction of its choosing. However, you may minimize chances of actual damage if you affix a stake or support nearby and try to gently guide the sunflower to grow in a more upright position.
What happens if the sunflower stem breaks below the flower?
If your sunflower breaks below the flower, you can try taping the stem as instructed above and using a splint to help it heal gently. If you are growing multi-headed branching sunflowers, you may wish to cut some for a vase indoors to free up some of the plant’s energy to work on healing itself.
Can you replant a broken sunflower stem?
It is possible to grow sunflowers from cuttings or to encourage existing sunflower plants to grow roots, however it truly depends on the age and type of sunflower. I have gotten some – but not all – broken sunflower stems to sprout roots while sitting in water. You can certainly try rooting fully broken stems in water or replanting sunflower stems in damp soil. Your mileage may vary.
What if you can’t fix a broken sunflower stem, or if the repair fails?
First of all, there is no harm in trying. Simply make your best attempt to align and tape the sunflower stem as close as possible to the original alignment. If your plant’s stem fully snapped in two pieces, you may not have the best luck fixing it. Even if you do have a good chance, things can go wrong and the repair could fail before the plant heals.
If this happens, just know you tried your best. There will always be next year. And in the meantime, it’s time to figure out What to Do with Sunflower Stalks. It’s always fun to repurpose things in the garden!
My Mistakes – What I Did Wrong with My Sunflower Stem Repair Jobs
I have tried this method a few different times, mostly successfully. Here are a few mistakes I made in trying to fix a broken sunflower stem:
- Not Checking on It after 2 Weeks – Life is busy, what can I say? We got into back-to-school season and everything got busy and the garden took a backseat. I didn’t check on the plant regularly and the masking tape did end up ripping apart due to the weight of the sunflower leaning down with gravity over time. Had we not had a storm, it may not have come off the stake I put next to the repaired stalk.
- Trying to Root a Sunflower Stem in Water Outside – We have a dog and she tried drinking from the bucket I had it in. I also now worry about mosquitos breeding in standing water.
- Not Using Stronger Tape – OR – Replacing the Tape – Had I noticed the tape was breaking down, I could’ve easily reapplied another layer of masking tape around the stem.
Even if you make a mistake trying to fix your sunflowers, it is totally okay! Just think – anything is better than not trying at all.
